Finding a Lawyer for Your Business

Finding a good lawyer can be tricky, especially for small and mid-sized businesses that are new to the marketplace.
Life is full of unexpected surprises.  To reduce the impact those surprises can have on your business, it’s important to have appropriate plans in place before they occur.  For example, your business may need legal advice, and searching for a lawyer in the middle of a crisis can cause you to take your eye off of other important events.  A good lawyer can help you manage a crisis – or better yet, potentially avoid one altogether.  So, what are some considerations for selecting the right lawyer for your business?

Here are some helpful resources to aid in your search for the right attorney:
  • Go by what you need: Entrepreneur magazine, a publication for small-business owners, suggests identifying a specialist with expertise that meets your specific legal needs. Your company's size and future plans will also dictate the type of law firm or lawyer you will want to enlist.
  • Get a referral or read reviews: Forbes, a business magazine, says that you should try to get a referral through a trusted person such as a family member or friend; otherwise, you may choose to scan the web and read reviews on sites such as Yelp and LinkedIn. Make sure to read their peer reviews and thoroughly interview several of them as well.
  • Do your due diligence: As you are using these online tools, don’t be hasty. Yahoo! Finance recommends being thorough in the search and diligently evaluating an attorney's history, disciplinary history, performance and records before finalizing an engagement.

Following these steps can help identify a lawyer who can help protect your business before, during or even after a crisis.  Think of it this way - retaining a lawyer is similar to purchasing an  insurance policy- put in the legwork early for benefit in the long run.
