Crafting A Clickable Email Subject Line

1/11/2017

Crafting a Clickable Email Subject Line
A clear subject line that highlights the importance of the email and allows for the email to be easily searched and referenced at any point in time is crucial to your email message. If there is no value conveyed in the subject line, the chances of your audience reading the email drops. With any email communication you are sending you want to see as many clicks possible on the message. These clicks don’t happen when an audience doesn’t see the purpose of opening an email.

Writing a good email subject line is not only important for external communications with your customers, but also internal messages within your organization. Regardless of the audience, you want to tailor your subject lines to fit the needs and actions the email requires.

To gain an increase in open rates for emails, consider following these tips:

Be Short
You want the receiver of the email to be able to read the entire subject line in the preview view of the email. Digital Doughnut, a business blog, suggests using emojis in the subject line to keep the message short yet informative. Start out with the most important pieces of information. If there is a need to write a subject line longer than 50 characters, let the important words follow the heart of the message or try replacing a word with an emoji.

Be Specific
Let the receiver know exactly what the email is in reference to. If it is an internal email include the name of the project that you are emailing about. Or if you are having a big sale or launching an incentives program let that be known immediately.  This allows for the email to be back tracked to at a later date and creates further opportunities for the reader to act upon the message of the email. Entice the reader with the most important information to ensure your email is gaining its maximum potential of open rates.

Be Timely
If your email is aimed at eliciting an action from the reader it is important to specify time. Whether it is for today, tomorrow, or one month from now, include that information so it can be acted upon instantly or marked on a calendar.

Be Personal
If you have formed a relationship with returning customers, consider including their name in a subject line. This will transform the email from just another promotion to a personalized piece that will interest them based upon their past history. This should be done with careful consideration as using someone’s name without their knowing they are on your email list may deter them from doing business with you. Just like you would take the time to get to know your customers in person, follow that same practice in your email communications.
